Thirteen of those arrests came in downtown, Legion Parkway area, mayor says. Those arrested had outstanding warrants on charges that ranged from child rape and cocaine trafficking to armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to a release from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
BROCKTON — Police arrested more than two dozen people, including 20 on Thursday alone, in a two-day warrant sweep in the city.
The sweep included city, state and federal law enforcement agencies, and took 27 people into custody.
Those arrested had outstanding warrants on charges that ranged from child rape and cocaine trafficking to armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to a release from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office. They are expected to be arraigned in Brockton District Court.
Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter said thirteen of the 27 arrests were made in the downtown and Legion Parkway area.
“We’ve been listening to our residents who are concerned about crime and loitering, especially downtown,” Carpenter said in a statement.
Carpenter said police have gone undercover in the last few weeks to target criminals who engage in “quality-of-life” crimes.
The sweep began Wednesday with seven arrests. Thursday, more than 50 members of various law enforcement agencies (including Brockton police and state police) worked to arrest 20 people.
State police also recovered a firearm and trafficking weight of suspected cocaine, according to the release.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said law enforcement “at all levels” were working to combat crime in Brockton.
Agencies that assisted in the sweep included Plymouth County State Police Detectives Unit, Brockton Police, the State Police Gang Unit, the State Police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Team, State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, the FBI, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, Massachusetts Parole, Department of Youth Services and the US Marshals Office.
Charges of those arrested include child rape, trafficking in cocaine, drug distribution, armed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, intimidating a witness and possession of a firearm.
Twenty-two of those taken into custody were residents of Brockton, while others had listed addresses in Easton, Bridgewater, Rockland and Freetown.
Warrant service, a regular duty for most police departments, has turned dangerous several times in the last few months in Massachusetts. In April, Yarmouth police Sgt. Sean Gannon was shot and killed by Thomas Latanowich while serving a warrant. One month later, Middleboro police officers were fired upon while serving an arrest warrant at a home on Wareham Street. The suspect, 38-year-old John Mann, was later found dead in his home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Brockton police said more arrests are expected in the next few days.
State police additionally executed a search at Max’s Blues Cafe Thursday evening. It was unclear if any arrests were made.
